If you are reading this, you are probably already a community-oriented person. You have willingly committed yourself to serving others, and (in most cases), to living with a new group of people. This activity is designed to enhance the ‘community-friendliness’ of your home, to ensure that it is welcoming and hospitable for all. Take a few moments to consider/discuss the following questions. Look at the arrangement of the main room of your house. Is the furniture arranged around a television…or is it arranged in a way that encourages conversation? Are the main living areas in your house clean and inviting? Would people be able to hang out in the living room/dining room/kitchen without having to move a bunch of junk? Is your kitchen organized and easy to navigate? Would visitors find fresh food (not mold!) in the pantry and the refrigerator? If your house has a guest room, is it kept clean and ready for visitors? Are the sheets clean? Is there closet space available? Take a look at the front of your house…is the yard free of clutter? Is the house well lit? Feel
free to add your own questions to this list—these are just suggestions. It is
easy for volunteers to get busy and neglect some of these basic housekeeping
issues, so take some time to discuss it with your group! If your house isn’t
quite ‘up to speed,’ divide up responsibilities in order to make your house a
more welcoming place. Visit with your housemates as you work—this could also be
a great opportunity to get to know each other better. Happy cleaning! |
