Gatherings
  • One way to get connected with other former volunteers in the area is by contacting the volunteer program that you served with. Ask them about the Network of Former Volunteers - a useful resource, coordinated by the St. Vincent Pallotti Center, for getting in touch with other formers anywhere in the U.S.!

Retreat opportunities

• The Jesuit Volunteer Corps: NW office in Seattle organizes one or two retreats each year - open to ALL formers. Contact Carol at 503-335-8202 or jvcnw@jesuitvolunteers.org.

• In Spokane, WA the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center hosts retreats. Call 509-448-1224.

• The St. Martin’s Abbey Guest House, run by the Benedictines, is located in Lacey. Call 206-438-4457.

Volunteer opportunities
  • The Downtown Emergency Service Center needs volunteers for many jobs such as working in the shelter, picking up donated items, and helping with the new Lyon Building (a housing program for homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS). • The Hands On Network works to connect people with volunteer projects around the United States.  The local affiliate of Seattle Works, has a directory of volunteer opportunities.  They are located at 2123 East Union, 206-324-0808, info@seattleworks.org

Music, film, and other cultural events
  • The Seattle Art Museum has more than 21,000 objects are housed within the five-story, limestone, terra cotta and marble building--Robert Venturi's controversial $64 million design. Don't miss the chance to visit this great museum. It is located at 100 University St. in Seattle, WA 98101-2902 (206) 654-3255.

• Green Lake Park is awesome. Tranquility and sports--it's all here at Seattle's cherished in-city park. There's nothing like a lake in the city. Located about eight miles north of downtown, this cherished lake-park is used by Seattleites at all times of the year, at all hours.

• Don't miss the Bumbershoot at 305 Harrison St.  in Seattle. The hometown hit of international proportions offers top headliners at low prices. The biggest music festival on the West Coast celebrates its 31st anniversary Labor Day 2001. Still surprisingly affordable considering the talent involved, this nonstop showcase of legendary artists and rising stars unfolds in more than 30 different indoor and outdoor venues, stages and galleries in Seattle Center's 74-acre meadow.

• Seattle International Film Festival is 
Seattle's homegrown film festival is the largest in the country. Find a foreign gem or, in some cases, something you'd prefer to have shipped back to its country of origin. The festival usually takes place from mid-May to mid-June. Four or five venues screen anywhere from three to five films a day for the duration of the event. There's always something showing.

• Check the newspapers for the dates of the annual Bite of Seattle. More than 60 local restaurants showcase their yummiest creations at this three-day event. Booths from eateries as diverse as Chutneys and the Frankfurter offer entrees for no more than $5, and tasting samples for $2.
