Volunteer programs headquartered in Wisconsin

• One way to get connected with current and/or former volunteers in the area is to plan intercommunity volunteer gatherings such as prayer groups, game nights, meals/picnics, etc. 

The following programs are headquartered in Wisconsin:  Capuchin Franciscan Volunteer Corps- Midwest (Mt. Calvary), Central City Teaching Partnership (Milwaukee), and Family Unity International, The Working Boys Center (Elmgrove). 

 

Parishes that current and former volunteers have recommended
• St. Hedwig's of Three Holy Women Parish on the lower East Side, is a consolidation of three parishes while still maintaining the three churches (St. Hedwig, Holy Rosary and St. Rita).

• Gesu Parish in Milwaukee has tons of young adult programs and social action and a continuing series called Ignatian Forum and regular presentations and programs on Social Justice. See web page for more information at www.gesuparish.org.


• St. Benedict the Moor, 1015 N. Ninth St. in Milwaukee has great urban ministry programs - homeless and prison issues/strong social justice edge. Lots of current/former Cap Volunteers and others. This parish also serves a homeless population, providing a daily meal and health care. Call 414-271-0135 or email stbens@execpc.com for more information.


• Marquette Campus Ministry has masses, programs, big grad school population at MU also which may be a connection for vols. Also a good group of faith based students called JUSTICE - call Gerry Fischer in campus ministry (414-288-3687).
 
• St. Pats Parish (south side of Milwaukee- Hispanic ministry). Part of a Jesuit urban confederation of ministries which includes Casa Romero retreat center, Nativity school (middle school), and Homeboyz Interactive (gang ministry and vocational training) - lots of vol options through St Pats.
 
• St. Sebastian, 5400 West Washington Blvd., Milwaukee (Sundays 8, 10:30, 6pm) has a good liturgy, social justice emphasis, friendly, quite a few former volunteers and Ignatian Associates. 

• Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, 2491 N. Murray Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53211 has a long history of promoting justice.  It is definitely a vibrant community with babies, youth, college students, young professionals, families, and elderly.  Quite a mix!  Call 414-962-2443 or email sspp@execpc.com.

 

Retreat opportunities/spirituality centers

• The Racine Dominican's Siena Center offers great retreats in the Racine area. 

• Dwelling Place, 1704 E. Norwich St. Milwuakee, WI 53207, 414-489-9444. this is a retreat center "for the poor."  Its mission is to provide space and resources for those who cannot afford to pay for a retreat or day of recollection.  A free will offering is accepted for use of the space.  Email: jschroed@stritch.edu.

• St. Vincent Pallotti Retreat Center is located in Elkhorn, WI. Call 262-723-2108.

• The Jesuit Retreat House, Oshkosh, WI

• Holy Hill is located in Hubertus. Call 414-628-1838.

• Monastery of Saint Benedict Center Saint Benedict Center is located 20 minutes from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Our 130-acre setting includes: wooded nature trails, a 10,000-year-old glacial lake, restored prairie and oak savanna, orchards, gardens and sacred space for meditation. Join us for daily prayer, Centering Prayer and Taizι prayer.  Come for a few hours, a few days or longer for personal retreat.  Attend one of our year-round spiritual growth programs.  Volunteer and help our environmental restoration efforts.  Learn about Benedictine Women of Madison, a ground breaking ecumenical community of Christian women founded by the Sisters of Saint Benedict of Madison.  Find serenity, solitude and simplicity for your life.  Call 608-831-9304 for more information.  All are welcome!

• The Capuchin Franciscans run the Monte Alverno Retreat Center in Appleton. Call 920-733-8526.

• The Capuchins also run a retreat house, Saint Anthony Retreat Center, in Marathon. Call 715-443-2236.

• In Burlington, the Saint Francis Friary and Retreat Center is run by the Franciscans. Call 414-763-3600.

Repairers of the Breach-Milwaukee's only daytime shelter for homeless people. 

• Casa Maria, 1131 N. 21st Street, Milwaukee, 414-344-5745.  Casa is the local Catholic Worker house in Milwaukee and provides hospitality, clothing and package food to those in need.

Music, film, and other cultural events
• Summerfest is a huge music festival in Milwaukee.  It boasts multiple stages with music, dance, beer and brauts.  Also there are many ethnic festivals at the summerfest grounds (which are located right on the lake front) such as Polish, Spanish, Italian, American Indian and Irish, which is one of the biggest in the world.  Click here for more info on Milwaukee's festivals.

• Milwaukee Art Museum, 750 N Lincoln Memorial Dr., Milwaukee, 414-224-3200.

• A self-described entertainment complex has a little something for everyone at Luke's on the Water, 1225 N Water St., Milwaukee. Call 414- 223-3210 for more information.

• Mitchell Park Domes, 524 S Layton Blvd., Milwaukee, 414-649-8126. These domes milk nature for all its worth, offering visitors everything from jungles to deserts to tea gardens.

• In Madison, there are free concerts on the Square (Wednesdays June 26-July 31) and free Jazz concerts @ Five (Wednesdays Aug. 7-Sept. 4).

Downtown Bookstore on 327 E Wisconsin is a MASSIVE used bookstore.  Good books in good shape for a very cheap price.

Jazz in the Park on Thursdays throughout the summer in Cathedral Square in Milwaukee.

• Ignatian Associates: For a much more intentional faith community - connect with a program connected with the Wisconsin Jesuit Province called the Ignatian Associates - 2 year formation program/weekly meetings/apostolic component/ and after 2 years of formation a vow ceremony.
